Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And He went up on the mountain and called to Him those He Himself wanted. And they came to Him. Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach… – Mark 3:13-14

Jesus chose His disciples, and then called them to Himself. When they came to Him, He “appointed” (i.e. ordained) them to do two things: 1) be with Him, and 2) go out and preach.

The order is important. Priority number one for Jesus’ disciples was to “be with Him.” Only after that requirement was met would He “send them out to preach” (v 14). How often do we get that backwards? We try to launch into our day – our even a lifetime of ministry – without first spending time with Jesus. We prioritize activity – doing stuff for Jesus – over intimacy – simply being with Him.

Take today to re-center, and re-focus. Jesus is your Number One Priority. Be with Him; and from that place of intimacy, you can go out and do everything else!

Prayer:

Father, help me to prioritize well. I know my first and only priority should be spending time with Jesus. Help me to put time with Him above all else, in Jesus’ name!
