Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai. – Gen 16:2

God’s will was not for Sarah to “obtain children” by Hagar; it was for Sarah to have her own child! Raising another woman’s child was not the fullness of the promise; it was a counterfeit that Sarah and Abraham accepted because they got impatient.

A counterfeit is something that seems like God’s promise, but doesn’t really live up to the real thing. A counterfeit might seem nice for now; but accepting it will create problems you will have to unwind down the road (see vv4-8).

Hold out for the fullness of God’s promise! It’s worth waiting for the real thing in the end! Don’t give up hope, just because it’s taking longer than you expected. Don’t give up, just because it’s getting harder than you prepared for! God will do what He has promised to do; no matter how impossible it seems.

“For with God nothing will be impossible.” – Lk 1:37

Prayer:

Father, give me strength. I know what You have promised me; and I believe it is going to happen. I will wait for the fullness of Your promise, in Jesus’ name!
