Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where have you come from, and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.” The Angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hand.” – Gen. 16:8-9

Many of us are tempted to run when we face conflict. “I should just quit,” we say about our job. “I should just walk out,” we think about our marriage. But the easy answer is not always the right answer. Sarah despised Hagar, so Hagar ran away! But the Angel of the Lord met Hagar as she fled. “Return to your mistress,” He told her, “and submit yourself under her hand.”

When life gets tough and unfair, the answer is not always to run! For Hagar, the answer was to return. God wanted Hagar to go back to Sarah, even though Sarah despised her; and as she did, God would bless her beyond her wildest dreams!

God may ask you to walk away. Or, He may tell you to return. But let Him decide what to do, because He alone knows the way.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for always showing me what is right! You are amazing, and I am so grateful. I recognize that staying or going is not my decision to make: it’s Yours. I will do what You tell me, in Jesus’ name.
