CityLight Pastor Commentary:

“Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water; thus you shall bring water for them out of the rock, and give drink to the congregation…” (Num 20:8). What did Moses do wrong? God told Moses to speak to the rock, and promised that water would flow out of it for the people of Israel when he did so. Instead of speaking to the rock, he hit it. Instead of listening to God’s explicit instructions, Moses relied on what had worked in the past. In Ex 17:6, Moses had used his rod to strike a rock so that water would flow out of it. He attributed the miracle to his rod – instead of His God. God does not want us to have faith in props and routines that bring us the results we desire; He wants us to have faith in Him. The Cross of Jesus Christ is the only prop we will ever need. Rely on it, knowing that the power of the Name Jesus Christ is enough to effect the change you desire to see.

Prayer:

“Father, help me to follow Your instructions through and through! I want to be fully and completely obedient to everything You have to say. I want to rely on the Cross of Your Son Jesus Christ for net-breaking, miracle-working power!”
