Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

And coming in that instant [Anna] gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem. – Lk 2:38

The purpose of prophecy is to reveal Jesus. The purpose of service is to know Jesus. Anna was a prophetess. She had spent her whole life in the temple, serving God, and listening to His voice. However, she was different from the religious leaders; because when Jesus actually showed up at the temple, she wasn’t so busy with religious rituals that she missed Him! When Jesus showed up, she dropped what she was doing, gave thanks to the Lord, and told everyone who He was!

If your service distracts you from Jesus instead of helping you see Him for who He really is, it may be time for a change. You don’t have to convince God to bless your work. It’s much easier to simply ask Him what He’s already blessing, and jump on in!

Listen to what God is doing. Wait for Him to show up. Then, once He arrives, drop what you are doing: give thanks, and tell everyone around you who He is!

Prayer:

Father, make me sensitive to the leadings of Your Holy Spirit. I know all I have to do to see Jesus is pay attention to Your voice! Make me more receptive than ever to Your guidance, in Jesus’ name.
