CityLight Pastor Commentary:

“Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance… every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire” (Lk 3:8-9). John baptized for the remission of sins, and then cautioned those who had just been baptized that they should live in light of their forgiveness. Part of his message was universal, and applied to everyone there: give generously (Lk 3:11). Then he moved on to specific instructions for different groups of people: the tax collectors should do their job honestly, and the soldiers should be trustworthy and content. In other words, he didn’t tell everyone to quit his day job and become a full-time minister! God calls us to specific careers, and then tells us to maintain integrity and do our jobs well. Part of what makes the Kingdom of God so effective is its diversity. You are specifically designed to reach a group of people that nobody else in the whole world can reach. So, whatever you do, do it well!

Prayer:

“Father, thank You for celebrating our differences! You don’t want all of Your children to be uniform in our careers; all You ask is uniformity in our desire to honor You! Help me to honor You in everything I do, every single day of the week, in Jesus’ Mighty Name!”
