CityLight Pastor Commentary:

“Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time…” (Luke 4:13). When Jesus was tempted by Satan, He responded by quoting Scripture. In Luke 4:3, Satan tells Jesus to turn a stone into bread to prove He can perform miracles; Jesus responds with Scripture. In v 7, Satan tells Jesus he will give Him the whole world as a possession in exchange for worship; Jesus responds with Scripture. In v 9, Satan tells Jesus to throw Himself from the temple at Jerusalem to prove that angels would rescue Him; Jesus responds with Scripture. Whenever we are tempted, we must respond with Scripture. It is the only way to properly reinforce our mind, body and spirit with the Word of God as it applies to our specific situation. If even the Son of God needed to respond to temptation by quoting Scripture, who are we to think we can get away with anything less?

Prayer:

Father, fill my memory banks with Scripture! I want to be able to apply Your Word to every situation in which I find myself. I know I don’t stand a chance without Your Word, so help me to know it inside and out!
