Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

“But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.” – Deut 18:20

Under the Old Covenant, prophets who got it wrong were put to death. If any man or woman claimed to have heard from God, but his or her prediction did not come to pass, he or she would be killed. Thank God we live under a New Covenant of grace through Jesus Christ!

Under our New Covenant with God, we are all called to a prophetic lifestyle. Luke 7:28 says that John the Baptist was the greatest prophet to live under the Old Covenant, but “…he who is least in the Kingdom of God is greater than he.” That means all believers! We are invited to hear God’s voice, and tactfully speak out the words He gives us.

So how do you know if God is speaking to you? Read His word, and get to know His character. The Bible will expose you to the tone and timbre of His voice, so that when He speaks you will recognize Him. If it doesn’t line up with His word, it’s not from God: period.

The words you receive will rarely be 1) all God, or 2) all flesh (i.e. your own personal desires). Most of the time, what you hear in your spirit will fall somewhere in between those two extremes. It is your job to filter out what is your flesh, and what is God. That process becomes easier as you 1) spend ample time in the Word, 2) get in a prophetic church community and share what you are receiving, and 3) practice!

Our prophetic journey with God is life long. It is our joy to know Him more, every single day.

Prayer:

Father, help me to distinguish Your voice from the desires of my own heart. Strengthen me to resist my own voice, and yearn for more of Yours. I want to know You more!
