Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem… – Matt. 2:1
Our first day’s reading tells us a portion of the Christmas story. When Jesus was born, “…wise men from the East came to Jerusalem.” But what was it that made these men wise? Was it their riches? Was it their intelligence?
These men brought gifts of, “…gold, frankincense, myrrh” (v 11); but it wasn’t their wealth that made them wise. These men were sages – astrologers – who knew much about the stars; but it wasn’t their intelligence that made them wise! What made these men wise is far simpler yet infinitely more profound.
These men were wise because they sought Jesus. While the rest of the world was ignoring the Messiah, they sought Him out! They came to Jesus and laid their lives at His feet. Do you want to be wise this year like you’ve never been before? Then make a determination to seek Jesus like never before!
All the riches and intelligence in the world cannot make you wise if you don’t have Jesus! But if you have Him, you will have all the wisdom you will ever need. Make 2020 the year you seek Jesus like never before! And as you do, He will make you wiser than ever before.
…for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist. – Lk. 21:15
Prayer:
Father, thank You for making me wise! This is going to be the year I pursue Jesus like never before. I thank You for Your wisdom, in Jesus’ name!
