Commentary from Pastor Mike White:

“The Lord God of heaven…will send His angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there” (Gen 24:7). Abraham gave his servant a near impossible task. He asked him to enter into a foreign land and find a wife for Isaac, without actually bringing Isaac! How was he possibly supposed to know if the woman he chose would please Isaac? What if he brought back the wrong one? What if he didn’t find any women at all?!

God sent an angel before him to prepare the way. We see this pattern over and over in Scripture. Before the birth of John the Baptist, God sent an angel to Zacharias (Lk 1:11). Before the birth of Jesus, God sent an angel to prepare the way: first to Mary (Lk 1:26), and then to shepherds (Lk 2:9). The writer of Hebrews calls angels, “…ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation” (Heb 1:14). In other words, whenever God sends us out, He sends forth ministering angels to make preparations for us ahead of time!

Abraham’s servant never saw the angel. In fact, the only time we see this angel mentioned again is when the servant is sharing his testimony with Laban’s family (Gen 24:40). Yet just because he didn’t see him doesn’t mean he wasn’t there. God promises to send out angels who will minister on our behalf, even if we don’t see them. He will make preparations, before we arrive, for everything we are about to do!

Prayer:

Father, make Your calling on my life abundantly clear. I know that whenever something seems impossible, You send out messengers from Heaven to act on my behalf and prepare the way ahead of time. With Your help, I can do anything!
