Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, it came to pass that the Lord spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying: “Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them–the children of Israel. Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses.” – Josh. 1:1-3

Nobody wants to be an assistant! Everybody wants to be the boss! But God loves assistants. God uses assistants. God loves to take people who are willing to selflessly serve, and use them to play a pivotal role in His plans and purposes.

Joshua was just an assistant. But Joshua had seen God speak to Moses face to face. He had spent countless hours in God’s presence as a consequence of selflessly serving Moses (Ex. 33:11). He knew what God’s voice sounded like because He had been on the mountain with Moses in the presence of God (Ex. 24:13)! So when God needed someone to continue Moses’ mission, He chose someone who had experienced His presence, and knew the sound of His voice.

You might be just an assistant. But God has big plans for you. You have no idea what He is preparing you for! So serve well where you are, and watch what God does with your life.

Prayer:

Father, I will gladly serve: wherever, whenever, and for whomever You want! I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve You. I will do it with joy, all of my days, in Jesus’ name.
