Commentary from Pastor Mike White:

On that day the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they had feared Moses, all the days of his life. – Josh 4:14

We should never try and earn power and respect. Jesus cautioned His disciples that those who exalt themselves will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted (Lk 14:11). If we try and earn power and respect, both will prove elusive. But when we pursue God, and live our lives in humble obedience to Him, He will give power and respect into our hands.

Joshua served Moses faithfully for countless years. Joshua did not wince as God called him Moses’ assistant (Josh 1:1). He didn’t demand a raise, or cry out to God to be promoted. He simply waited for God to demonstrate His power.

Had Joshua tried to force the people of Israel to respect him, they would have never listened. All God had to do was exalt Joshua, with one glorious demonstration of His power, and the people of Israel feared him, “…all the days of his life” (v 14). Everything we seize for ourselves is fleeting; but all that God gives us is permanent.

Trust in God. Humble yourself, and He will exalt you in good time.

Prayer:

Father, remind me to stay humble. I want to seek You first, instead of lusting after anything this world can offer me. I know You will exalt me in Your timing, not mine. Thank You for Your perfection!
