Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
…and [the officers] commanded the people, saying, “When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests, the Levites, bearing it, then you shall set out from your place and go after it.” – Josh 3:3
When God moves, we follow! The people of Israel were instructed to wait until the ark of the covenant moved, and then follow it. They were instructed to sit still until the very Presence of God went up before them, and then move! Moses exercised the same principle. He told God, “If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here” (Ex 33:15). If God wasn’t leading, he refused to go!
How many times in your life have you come up with your own plans, and asked God to bless them after they were set in stone? How many times have you set off in your own direction, and expected God’s presence to follow you? How many times have you made a decision on your own, and then asked God to bless what you are doing after the fact?
It is far better to follow God’s presence with our actions, than to ask God to confirm our actions with His presence.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your guiding presence! Help me to be humble and submissive until I see You moving. If you’re not leading, I don’t want to go!
