Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. – Lk. 16:22-23
This rich man didn’t go to hell because he had lots of money. He was shut out of heaven because he didn’t provide for his brother. Lazarus was laid at his gate (v 20)! And even though the rich man had much to spare, he didn’t share anything with the one who needed it most.
The Kingdom of God is relational. God doesn’t judge you based on what you have or don’t have. He will judge you based on what you give to others. When it is within your power to bless, do you bless?
And to those who say, “Well I’m not rich, so I’m safe!” You have something to give. Are you pouring out what God has filled you with? Are you filling the world with what He created you to give?
“And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’” – Matt. 25:40
Prayer:
Father, make me a giver. You have blessed me with so much! And now I know it is my role and responsibility to give back. Help me to be selfless in the way I love others, in Jesus’ name!
