Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
So He said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or parents or brothers or wife or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, who shall not receive many times more in this present time, and in the age to come eternal life.” – Lk 18:29-30
Following Jesus is amazing – but the road is not always easy. Jesus told His disciples to leave everything and follow Him. Being a disciple of Christ will mean passing up opportunities the world will say you are crazy not to take. Following Jesus may put strain on your family, or even bring you half-way across the world to serve God.
But He will make it up to you. God promises that, in the end, this life called discipleship will be worth it! Jesus’ disciples had, “left all and followed” Him (Lk 18:28). But when they pointed out their loss, Jesus pointed to their gain. He promised they would receive “many times more” (v 30) in this present time, and then inherit eternal life. He would restore everything they had lost – in due time, but in this life –and then bless them with eternal life in Heaven!
Four years ago, I left a prosperous career in finance to become a pastor. I worried about what my choice would mean for my family. But God has made it up to us. We have never lacked for one single thing. He has blessed my family in ways we could never have imagined, and in ways for which we would have never known how to ask!
When God asks you to step out and follow Him, say yes. You will never regret a “yes” to God. He will make sure of it.
Prayer:
Father, I trust You with all my heart. Give me the courage to say yes to the calling You have for my life! I know You will make it worth it.
