Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And he said, “All these things I have kept from my youth.” – Lk. 18:21

The rich young ruler’s problem was not that he was rich! It was that he was proud. He came to Jesus asking, “What shall I do to inherit eternal life?” (v 18). Jesus summarized the Mosaic commandments as the necessary requirements. The rich young ruler replied confidently. He had done everything Jesus asked!

But had he? Take a look at the ten commandments (see Ex. 20). Have you ever taken the Lord’s name in vain (v 7)? Have you ever violated the Sabbath (v 8)? Have you ever taken something that does not belong to you (v 15)? Have you ever told a lie because it was in your best interest to do so (v 16)? Have you ever so much as looked at something that belongs to someone else and wished that it belonged to you (v 17)?

Of course you have. If you’re honest, you’ve done all of the above! And do you know what that means? You have not kept God’s commandment. You are imperfect and in need of a savior. But I have news for you!! Jesus came to save you. He came so that, when you put your trust in Him, your sins will be forgiven and you will have everlasting life!

Don’t be too proud to admit you need Jesus. Receive Him into your heart; and He will change everything in an instant.

Prayer:

Jesus, I receive You into my heart! I am not too proud to admit that I need You. Thank You that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. I am grateful! And I will spend my life serving You in response to Your goodness, in Jesus’ name.
