Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” – Lk 18:18

A rich young ruler came to ask Jesus how to inherit eternal life. But his question was flawed from the outset. “What shall I do,” he asked.

Eternal life has nothing to do with you. This rich young ruler was operating under the mistaken impression that we have anything to do with our salvation. Jesus already did all the work! He lived a perfect, sinless life. Then, He gave His life as a sacrifice, and died for our sins! He took on the punishment we deserve, so that we could inherit the reward only He deserves!

Salvation is a gift. Jesus already finished His work; and there is nothing you must do to help Him! Simply open your heart, and receive the eternal life He purchased for you 2,000 years ago on the Cross!

Prayer:

Father, thank You for the Cross! I believe Jesus died for my sins. I believe He was raised from the dead, and is seated at Your right hand in heaven. I believe that when I die, I will be raised into Heaven, just as He was!
