Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Now Jacob cooked a stew; and Esau came in from the field, and he was weary… So [Esau] swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. – Gen 25:29, 33

The reason most men and women fall into sin is simple: they are tired.

Esau was tired. He has spent all day in the field, and he was hungry. Jacob found him in his moment of weakness, and tempted him. “Sell me your birthright,” he said (v 31). Because he was tired, Esau agreed.

Fatigue breeds contempt. Esau exaggerated his circumstances because he was tired: first internally, and then out loud. He convinced himself that short-term relief was worth his inheritance. Because he was tired, he gave up his birthright.

Don’t let the enemy talk you out of your inheritance because you’re tired. Maybe you’ve been at the same job for 10 years, but you still haven’t received that promotion. Maybe you’ve been searching for a spouse for decades, but you still haven’t found Mr. or Mrs. Right. Don’t give up on what God has promised you. When you’re tired, God’s Holy Spirit will strengthen you!

Prayer:

Father, I’m tired! Strengthen me with Your Holy Spirit. Give me the energy to cling to Your promises for my life with everything I have. I know that everything You promised is coming my way, in Jesus’ name!
