Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
So it was, whenever Israel had sown, Midianites would come up; also Amalekites and the people of the East would come up against them. Then they would encamp against them and destroy the produce of the earth as far as Gaza, and leave no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep nor ox nor donkey. – Judges 6:3-4
Every harvest season, Israel’s enemies would come into their land, destroy all their crops, and steal all their animals. God had led Israel into a “land flowing with milk and honey” (Ex. 3:17)! But the abundance did them no good because the enemy kept coming in and taking what was God had provided.
Verse one tells us why the enemy – the devourer – had access to Israel in the first place. “The children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord” (v 1). Israel stopped listening to God! So God “delivered them into the hand of [their enemies].” God didn’t want to destroy His people! But His people removed themselves from the umbrella of His protection through disobedience. God can protect you when you stay by His side! But when you wander off and away from Him, you leave yourself exposed.
Obedience is what causes you to prosper, and also protects what you have. Had Israel listened to God – had they stayed faithful to Him! – their crops and livestock would have been protected and preserved. The enemy would have had no access to them. And as you listen to God, not only will He bless you beyond your wildest dreams, but He will also protect what He has given you. The enemy will not be able to touch you or anything you have, because you remain faithful to God.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your supernatural provision! Thank You that You not only provide for me, but You also protect what You have provided. The enemy has no access to me because I have laid my life at Your feet, in Jesus’ name!
