Commentary from Pastor Mike White:

“As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, ‘Follow Me.’ So he arose and followed Him” (Matt 9:9). Tax collectors were dirty dogs. They were known to be filthy men who cheated their fellow Israelites out of money during the Roman occupation. So why did Jesus choose Matthew?

Matthew had a unique skill set. As a tax collector, he paid attention to the smallest details, and was highly skilled at keeping intricate records. That would come in handy as he recorded his account of the Gospel! Jesus recognized that Matthew could accomplish something that no other man could do.

Matthew was imperfect and corrupt; but God used him for His glory. No matter where you are, and no matter what you’ve done, you are uniquely qualified to serve God. The triumphs and trials you have been through have positioned you to reach a people group for Christ that no one else can reach!

There is no sin so great that it can overshadow the finished work of the Cross. God wants you!

Prayer:

Father, thank You that the Cross of Your Son Jesus Christ makes me whole. Thank You that You have called me, not in spite of my weaknesses, but because of them. I trust in You with all that I have, and all that I am!
