Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And she said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” So he awoke from his sleep, and said, “I will go out as before, at other times, and shake myself free!” But he did not know that the Lord had departed from him. – Judges 16:20

The Philistines had tried to kill Samson before. But every time they tried to capture him, he broke free. So even after Delilah found out the secret to his strength and shaved his head, Samson assumed he would be able to break free again. He thought he would easily defeat the Philistines because he had done it many times before! “But he did not know that the Lord had departed from him.”

What was it that caused the Lord to depart from Samson? It was his pride. It was his belief that, no matter what he did, God would rescue him. But it is possible to remove yourself from God’s grace. Samson did what he wanted to do. He pushed the limits because he knew he was strong! But pride comes before the fall (Prov. 16:18). Humility attracts the presence of God; but pride repels Him.

Are you feeling strong? Repent. Ask God to remind you just how fragile you are on your own. And then thank God that you are more than a conqueror (Rom. 8:37) in Him!

Prayer:

Father, I am strong in You! But I am nothing on my own. I pray that You would remind me just how much I need You daily! I pray that You would remove every ounce of pride from my life. Cause me to lean on You with humility, in Jesus’ name!
