Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

And her rival also provoked her severely, to make her miserable, because the Lord had closed her womb. So it was, year by year, when she went up to the house of the Lord, that she provoked her; therefore she wept and did not eat. – 1 Sam 1:6-7

Peninnah had children; but Hannah did not. Peninnah provoked and mocked Hannah and became her “rival” (v 6). As a result, Hannah took her eyes off the “double portion” (v 5) she already had received. Instead of focusing on all the areas in which she was blessed, she focused on the one thing she was missing; and it made her “miserable” (v 6)!

The enemy loves to mock you for the one thing you’re missing. He wants to take your eyes off everything you’ve already received – all the places God has blessed you abundantly – to make you focus on the one thing you lack.

Stay patient. Love God with all your heart! Ignore your rivals. They are provoking you because of what they’re missing; and it truly has nothing to do with you. God will fulfill your every desire, just as He did for Hannah!

Prayer:

Father, help me to keep my eyes on Jesus! I am so thankful for everything You have given me. Help me not to worry about what I’m lacking, and to stay grateful for everything You’ve given into my hand!
