Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” – Jn. 5:24
If you hear Jesus’ word and believe in Him, you have everlasting life. Right now. Present tense. It’s not that you will have eternal life at some point in the future. It’s not that you have to do something to get it through your own self-effort. When you believe in Jesus, you already have it now.
If you hear Jesus’ word and believe in Him, you have passed from death into life. Past participle. It already happened! You are a new creation (2 Cor. 5:17)! You have already adopted the saved and sanctified state Jesus needs you to be in to be used by Him.
Aren’t you so happy this morning that you can have confidence in your salvation? Aren’t you so grateful that you can rest easy, knowing for certain the eternal state of your soul? When you die you will be with Jesus forever. What a joy! Here and now – today – you have already passed into eternal life. That means you are dead to sin.[1] And that means that today will be filled with Resurrection life.
Expect God to move. You don’t have to do anything to earn the life He created you to live; you simply have to position yourself appropriately and receive His love. You were dead; but now you are alive in Jesus’ name!
Prayer:
Father, thank You for my new life! I am so grateful I get to spend eternity with You in Heaven. And I am so grateful that my new life starts now! I say goodbye to the things of the past, and I say hello to Your kingdom invading my life like never before, in Jesus’ name!
