Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
As they were going down to the outskirts of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us.” And he went on. “But you stand here awhile, that I may announce to you the word of God.” Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head, and kissed him and said: “Is it not because the Lord has anointed you commander over His inheritance?” – 1 Sam. 9:27 – 1 Sam. 10:1
Where the word is announced, the anointing follows. As Samuel walked Saul to the “outskirts of the city,” Samuel said, “But you stand here awhile, that I may announce to you the word of God” (1 Sam. 9:27). Samuel told Saul that he would be commander (i.e. king) over Israel. He announced God’s word for Saul’s life over Saul! And as he did, he “took a flask of oil and poured it on Saul’s head, and kissed him” (v 1).
God will never announce your destiny without giving you the anointing to get it done. He will never call you to greatness without empowering you with the oil of heaven to do His will! Get His word for your life. And then expect the anointing. Because once you are anointed, you will never have to do anything in your own strength, ever again. God will move through you, and His Spirit will be in you and on you!
Saul was not ready to be king; but he was anointed. And you may not feel ready for what God has called you to, but you are anointed too! Pursue the anointing – the manifest presence of God’s Holy Spirit – and let God do the rest.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your anointing! Thank You that wherever Your word is released, the anointing follows. You have called me to great things; but I don’t have to do them alone. I get to do them in Your presence, and with Your strength, in Jesus’ name!
