CityLight Pastor Commentary:
“For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Sam 16:7b). God does not see others as we see them. Throughout the history of mankind, God has maintained the ability to hate sin but still love sinners. He constantly rescued His people when they cried out to Him because He loves them; and He will do the same for you because He loves you! Perhaps more important, God does not see you as you see yourself! When you rely on the finished work of the Cross, an amazing exchange happens. From that moment on, when God looks at you, He sees His Son Jesus Christ. He doesn’t see your sin, faults or shortcomings; He sees the perfect, spotless Lamb of God who hung and died in your place on the Cross!
Father, thank You that when You look at me you see Jesus! I rely on Your Son for salvation, and I thank You that You saw fit to offer Him up as a substitute for my sins!
