Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.” And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and a young goat, and sent them by his son David to Saul. – 1 Sam 16:19-20

When King Saul called David to be his servant, David’s father knew exactly how to respond. He gave gifts to Saul to honor him for choosing his son.

Saul was the king! He didn’t need Jesse’s money; yet Jesse gave him gifts all the same. Jesse understood royal generosity. The gifts were not to satisfy Saul’s need to receive; they were to satisfy Jesse’s need to give. Jesse satisfied his need to give, without needing to receive anything in return.

God honors those who honor others. Whom are you honoring with your generosity?

Prayer:

Father, make me royally generous. Help me to be like Jesse, and give to the King! Every gift I give – no matter how much it is, or whom it’s for – is a gift directly to you. I know You will repay everything I’ve given.
