Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. – Jn 13:34
Under the Old Covenant, your responsibility was to, “…love your neighbor as yourself” (Lev 19:18). As if that wasn’t hard enough, Jesus ups the ante under the New Covenant! Now, your responsibility is not only to love others as you love yourself; it is to love them, “…as [Jesus has] loved you” (Jn 13:34).
Loving one another as Jesus loved us means being willing to lay down our lives for each other. It means putting your neighbor’s best interests ahead of your own! It means laying down your opinions for the sake of making someone else feel heard.
But the only way we can do that is by relying on God’s Holy Spirit. If you try to love people like Jesus without God’s help, you will fail; but if you simply let God love people through you, you will be fulfilled!
Prayer:
Father, help me to love other people like You! I am not perfect; but You can always love perfectly through me. Help me to lean on You like never before, in Jesus’ name.
