Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. – Jn 16:13
This verse has much to say about the character of God’s Holy Spirit:
1) The Holy Spirit is a gentleman. He will guide you into all truth. He won’t drag you or push you. Life with God is an invitation. You can choose to accept it and enjoy the benefits, or reject it and accept the consequences. Shepherds lead, but wolves push. Jesus is the Good Shepherd.
2) The Holy Spirit will not speak to you in a way that disagrees with God’s word. Jesus is the Word (Jn 1:1), and both Jesus and the Holy Spirit are one with the Father. The Holy Spirit will never speak something that does not line up with God’s word. Never.
3) The Holy Spirit is future-oriented. Satan tries to trap you in your past, but God breaks you free for your future. Any time you are mired in guilt for something you did a long time ago, Satan is at work. Simply confess your sin to God, and trust it is forgiven. Then, focus on the future with full faith that God has forgiven you!
We must know who the Holy Spirit is if we are to be led by Him!
Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your Holy Spirit! Thank You that after Jesus ascended into Heaven, You didn’t just leave us to our own devices. You filled us with Your Holy Spirit so we could go out and be like You!
