Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Now it came to pass, when Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples, that He departed from there to teach and to preach in their cities. – Matthew 11:1
Jesus did not simply ask His disciples to heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead and preach the Gospel to the poor (v 5); He commanded them. The disciples could have responded with insolence and rage because Jesus was telling them what do to. “Who does this Jesus think He is?” they might have asked. “He can’t tell me what to do!” they might have contended.
Yet the disciples didn’t argue. They understood an important principle: Jesus commands us so that we might command in His name. Jesus commands us to go out and do everything we see Him do in Scripture. When we stop arguing and submit to His commands, Heaven invades earth. We can command blind eyes to see, lame legs to walk, lepers to be cleansed, and deaf ears to hear in the name of Jesus! We can command the dead to be raised up, and closed hearts to open to the Gospel message, in the name of Jesus!
Do your prayers lack power? If you want to command powers and principalities, you have to allow yourself to be commanded by the Prince of Power who is above all principalities. Humble yourself at the feet of Jesus, and listen to His voice. Know that it is only when we submit to Him and His commands that every sickness and disease will submit to us!
Prayer:
Father, thank You that nothing You command us to do in Your word is scary; it’s all exciting! I want to see the sick healed, the dead raised, and the lepers cleansed in the name of Jesus! Help me to boldly command the wicked things of this world to flee, knowing that you command me to command them!
