Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

“Unless the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely now you would have sent me away empty-handed. God has seen my affliction and the labor of my hands, and rebuked you last night.” – Gen 31:42

Jacob had a horrible boss. Laban asked Jacob to work seven years for his daughter Rachel’s hand in marriage; and then on their wedding night, he gave him Leah instead! Then Laban asked Jacob to work another seven years for Rachel, and another six years for his flock. In the twenty years Jacob worked for Laban, his wages changed “ten times” (v 41). When Jacob finally quit, Laban chased him with a small army and demanded to know why he had left!

Jacob had a horrible boss; but God protected Jacob. God made sure he prospered. By the time Jacob left to return home, he had, “…oxen, donkeys, flocks, and male and female servants” (Gen 32:5). No matter how wicked your boss is, God will do the same for you!

Trust that God has you where He wants you. Trust that no matter what your boss thinks of you – or how bad (s)he has it out for you – God is in control. He will protect you and prosper you, just as He did Jacob!

Prayer:

Father, thank You for protecting me. Thank You for providing for me! Your will is all that matters. I trust that You are in control, in Jesus’ name!
