CityLight Pastor Commentary:

“Absalom rode on a mule. The mule went under the thick boughs of a great terebinth tree, and his head caught in the terebinth; so he was left hanging between heaven and earth” (2 Sam 18:9). Absalom was literally left high and dry by the donkey on which he was riding. The mule left him stuck in a tree so that David’s servant Joab found him and took his life. The message is this: be careful whom you allow to carry you. Absalom, as king, should have been riding on a horse; instead, Absalom rode on a mule. His foundation – the carrier which propelled him forward – was not fit for a king. We are all sons and daughters of God, and we are meant to ride in royal style. Christ is our firm foundation, and everything we do should be based upon Him (note that Christ and His armies ride on white horses – not mules – in Rev 19). If we allow any carrier less worthy than the Holy Spirit Himself to bring us forward, we will end up stuck!

Prayer:

Father, I want Your Son Jesus Christ to be my Firm Foundation! I don’t want to base my hope on anything – or anyone – else!
