Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And they prayed and said, “You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen…” – Acts 1:24
The disciples had a major decision to make! They needed to pick a replacement for Judas, and they had two perfect candidates: Justus and Matthias. Whom should they choose?
The disciples relied on God’s Holy Spirit to show them exactly whom they should choose. They didn’t make a list of pro’s and con’s, and they didn’t waste any time. They prayed; God spoke. Take note of the wording here: “O Lord…show which of these two You have chosen.” God had already made his choice. The disciples simply had to position themselves to hear from Him. They didn’t need to ask Him to choose, because He had already chosen! They only asked Him to reveal His will to them.
The disciples cast lots (v 26) after they prayed because the Holy Spirit had yet to fall. However, you and I don’t have to cast lots, draw straws, or play any other game to decipher God’s will any more. We are filled with His Holy Spirit! When we ask Him what He has decided, He will tell us in prayer.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for making Your will known to me! Thank You that You are always speaking. Remind me to listen for Your voice for the rest of my life, in Jesus’ name!
