Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
When he had come near to her, the woman said, “Are you Joab?” He answered, “I am.” Then she said to him, “Hear the words of your maidservant.” And he answered, “I am listening.” – 2 Sam 20:17
Joab was a on a mission! Sheba had rebelled against David, and Joab’s job was to find him and bring him to justice. He found Sheba in Abel, and surrounded the city. He and his men “battered the [city] wall to throw it down” (2 Sam 20:15). But out of nowhere, a woman asked to talk to Joab. She told him she was willing to give Joab what he wanted. “Watch,” she said, “…his head will be thrown to you over the wall” (v 21).
Joab was on a mission! But he still made time to stop and listen. And because he stopped to listen, he quickly received the head of his adversary.
You may know how you want to go about achieving your goals. But when someone else tells you they can help, make time to stop and listen. God will give you a plan of attack; but He will also surround you with other people to show you an easier way.
Prayer:
Father, remind me to stop and listen! I admit I don’t know best. You do! And You will surround me with people who can help me reach my goals. I pray I would never be too proud to listen when they call.
