Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. – Acts 2:5-6
As one hundred and twenty disciples were gathered together in an upper room, praying “with one accord in one place” (v 1), the Holy Spirit was “poured out” (v 33). The impact was 1) immediate and 2) far-reaching. The disciples were filled with supernatural power to preach the Gospel and see miracles take place. “Fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles” (v 43). And the whole city took notice.
When the Holy Spirit came, “a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind filled the whole house where [the disciples] were sitting” (v 2). Everyone in the upper room was impacted. But it didn’t stop there! When the entire city heard the sound, they “came together” (v 6). What was happening in the church was so powerful that those outside the church came to “marvel” (v 7).
What happens in our churches on Sundays should send shockwaves that reverberate throughout our communities. If the neighborhoods in which our churches are planted are not fundamentally changed as a result of our worship, we are not truly allowing the Holy Spirit to move! Lord, that You would remind us to let Your Spirit move, so that everything around us can be changed.
Prayer:
Father, You have given us – Your church – tremendous responsibility. You have sent us out to preach the Gospel! You have filled us with Your Holy Spirit so that we can see miracles when we pray. I pray that we would yield to Your Holy Spirit in such a way that everyone around us takes notice and wants to see Jesus for themselves, in Jesus’ name!
