Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Beerothite (armorbearer of Joab the son of Zeruiah), …thirty-seven in all. – 2 Sam 23:37-39
2 Samuel 23 describes King David’s “mighty men” (v 8). Eleazar fought so hard, “…his hand stuck to the sword” (v 1)). Shammah stood his ground when all the rest of Israel fled, and “…killed [all] the Philistines” (v 12). Benaiah “killed an Egyptian” when he was unarmed by stealing his spear and killing him with his own weapon (v 21). These were mighty men: incredible warriors!
But the chapter ends by describing Naharai, an “armorbearer” (v 37). Armorbearers weren’t celebrated warriors; they were servants who carried the warriors’ armor. Armorbearers weren’t the heroes; they were the assistants who backed the heroes up behind the scenes. Why would David, at the end of his list of mighty men, include an armorbearer? Because assistants are important. Servants are important. “Armorbearers” are important!
Does God have you in a position of service? Even if you’re not the hero, you will still be remembered. As you serve, you are heaping up glory for God in your service! And He will make sure you are rewarded – and remembered – for your deeds.
And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. – Matt 20:27-28
Prayer:
Father, thank You for honoring servants. I don’t need to be center stage! I don’t need to be the hero. Jesus is the only Hero: and I am just happy to back Him up!
