Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Then the king said to Araunah, “No, but I will surely buy it from you for a price; nor will I offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God with that which costs me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. – 2 Sam 24:24

Araunah offered his threshing floor to David for free; but David insisted on paying. David was the king of Israel. He could demand any piece of property He desired. Why would he insist on paying for Araunah’s land?

David refused to offer God anything that hadn’t cost David something in return. If your offering doesn’t move you, it won’t move God. If it doesn’t cost you something, it doesn’t mean a thing! God so loved the world, “…that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (Jn 3:16). He gave all He had to give; what will you give Him in return?

Prayer:

Father, make me willing to give everything I have to honor You. All that I have is Yours. You are welcome to it; I give to You freely out of all You have supplied.
