Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Now Peter and John went up together to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. And a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms from those who entered the temple; who, seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked for alms. – Acts 3:1-3

Peter and John were on their way to church when they passed a man who was “lame from his mother’s womb” (v 2). Every day, friends and/or family members laid the man outside the temple to beg for money. When he saw Peter and John, he “asked for alms” (v 3). And Peter and John stopped.

Peter and John could have kept right on walking. But they stopped. They engaged this man who had a demonstrable need. They perceived that he had faith to be healed. So they used their authority to release the power of God in the name of Jesus:

Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” – Acts 3:6

You want to see miracles. I know you do! But the Holy Spirit can’t start until you stop. You pray to see healing and then walk right by sick people. You pray to see salvation then walk right by sinners. Stop! Whenever someone gives you the opportunity to talk with them, engage. And as fast as you can say hello, God will open the door for His Holy Spirit to move! It all starts when you stop.

Prayer:

Father, help me to slow down! When someone around me has a need, I want to stop. I pray that I would never be too busy to stop and see what You are doing, in Jesus’ name!
