Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. – 1 Kings 3:7
Solomon was not proud. He was humble. When God came to Solomon and invited him to ask for anything, Solomon asked for “an understanding heart to judge [God’s] people” (v 9). Solomon was king! Yet he bowed the knee to God and admitted that he had no idea how to rule over Israel well. And as a result, God gave him everything he asked and more.
Be a king in public! But be a child with God in private. Solomon was king! People were counting on him to know what to do and to give commands so the nation of Israel could prosper! So Solomon ruled well in public. But then he retreated to God in private and admitted that, without God’s help, he was lost. It is irresponsible to act like a child in public when people are counting on you to be a leader! But it is irreconcilable to act proud in private when God wants you to come to him like a child.
Use your time in the secret place wisely. Come to God. Admit you need Him! Ask for help. Cry like a baby if you have to. Because when you come to him like a child in private, He will honor you like a king in public.
“Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” – Mark. 10:15
Prayer:
Father, thank You for giving me space to admit my faults and my fears. I need You. I can do nothing without you! But I know that when I come to you asking for help, You provide everything I need and more. Please give me the wisdom and strength required to carry out the mission You have given me to accomplish, in Jesus’ name!
