Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “Did I not tell you he would not prophesy good concerning me, but evil?” – 1 Kings 22:18
God was trying to warn Ahab through the prophet Micaiah! But Ahab didn’t want to hear it. Ahab wanted to go to war against Syria; but God cautioned Ahab that, if he charged into battle, all of Israel would end up “scattered on the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd” (v 17). Ahab rejected the word of the Lord and went into battle anyway; and he would die in the battle the Lord cautioned him not to fight.
You might not always want to hear what God has to say. But you always need to hear what God has to say! He is trying to keep you safe! He is trying to help you thrive, and stay healthy and prosper. Don’t just keep the words you want to hear, and throw out the ones you don’t! If anything, when God tells you something that is hard to receive, lean in all the more. It is the very words that are most difficult to receive that we should heed the most. As you humble yourself before God, and correct your course according to His word, He will not only keep you safe; He will also fight on your behalf.
Prayer:
Father, You are not obligated to tell me what I want to hear. But You will always tell me what I need to hear! Tell me! I can take it! I am so grateful for Your goodness and Your kindness, especially when I don’t want to hear it, in Jesus’ name.
