Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. – Acts 17:11

The Bereans received the word with eager anticipation, and then searched the Scriptures daily to find out if what they were hearing was really true. When we go to church and hear the word of God, we should be ready and excited! We should be open-minded, not closed-off. And once we go home, we should search the Scriptures to confirm what we’ve just heard.

I’m a pastor; but even I don’t think you should blindly accept what your pastor says from the pulpit without doing your homework. Search the Scriptures! Test the message coming from your pastor’s pulpit, and see how it stacks up to the word of God. God’s intent in giving us His written word is that every believer would know truth, without having to rely on someone else to explain it to him:

None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. – Heb 8:11

God gave us His written word so we could search the Scriptures. Whenever you want to know if something is true, you have His word! Love it, and use it, for the rest of your life.

Prayer:

Father, make me a lover of Your word! Thank You for giving us Your written word so we can search the Scriptures. I want to know You intimately, and personally, in Jesus’ name!
