Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against him; and Hoshea became his vassal, and paid him tribute money. – 2 Kings 17:3

The King of Syria overran the King of Israel. He forced him to be his vassal (his “slave” or “servant,” Strong’s H5650). He extracted involuntary tribute from God’s people for years.

If God’s people had simply turned to God and asked for salvation, He would have given it to them. But because they didn’t believe He loved them, they didn’t ask Him to save them. So instead, they stayed captive in their own land.

Don’t say yes to the enemy’s terms for your life. Satan has no right to demand payment from you. He has no right to demand service! Jesus died on the Cross and conquered the grave; and that means you are free to live without fear.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for complete freedom! Thank You that I don’t have to live on Satan’s terms. I don’t have to do what he says, because instead I do what You ask!
