CityLight Pastor Commentary:
“Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against him; and Hoshea became his vassal, and paid him tribute money” (2 Kings 17:3). The Kings of Israel fell into a dangerous pattern. They did not follow God’s word, and God could not protect them as a result. They no longer gave God permission to bless them, as was always His intent, because they lusted after other gods. Hoshea became a servant to a foreign king and paid him tribute. Whenever we lust after anything or anyone besides the One True God, we become a servant to that thing or person. We pay tribute in one form or another, because the wages of sin is death (Rom 6:23). We cannot serve two masters. Follow the One True God, and let Him shower you with blessing and favor!
Prayer:
Father, I want to follow You in every area of my life! Help me never to lust after money, or fame, or another person. I only want to live for You!
