Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord, and spread it before the Lord. – 2 Kings 19:14
The king of Assyria sent Hezekiah a letter demanding surrender. Yet Hezekiah knew he didn’t even need to personally respond to the foreign king’s threats. He spread the letter before the Lord, and asked God to cancel the enemy’s plans.
Here is what Hezekiah knew that we don’t: when someone threatens you, God perceives it as a threat against Himself. You don’t have to take it personally; He will. You don’t have to respond and retaliate; He will! Hezekiah knew that if Assyria made threats against God’s people, God would take it personally and respond. All Hezekiah had to do was pray; and God heard (v 20). God defended the city, and obliterated the enemy’s army.
When someone threatens you, don’t sweat. Keep your peace (2 Kings 18:35), and know that your Dad has your back.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for defending me! Help me to remember that You are always on my side. You defend me, which means I don’t have to defend myself.
