Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness… – Romans 4:5
Your faith is activated when you stop working, and start believing. Are you working for your salvation? Are you trying to earn God’s love and affection? Scripture says that righteousness belongs to, “…him who does not work but believes on [Jesus]” (Rom 4:5). You are made righteous when you stop working, and start believing. You aren’t saved by your works, but by the works of Jesus! You are saved by faith in Jesus Christ.
Does the fact that you are already righteous by faith mean that you shouldn’t do any work? Of course not. God has work for you to do! It does mean, however, that no amount of work you do for God can save you. You are already saved by faith; and you should work from that place in confidence, not for that place in fear!
Prayer:
Father, I know I am righteous by faith. I am saved because of the Cross of Jesus Christ: His work, and not mine! I want to serve you from that place of perfect confidence in my salvation, in Jesus’ name.
