Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Among these were the divisions of the gatekeepers, among the chief men, having duties just like their brethren, to serve in the house of the Lord. – 1 Chron 26:12
They were “chief men,” yet they had duties, “…just like their brethren.” They were leaders, yet they were never above being led. The best leaders help bear the weight of the burden they ask other people to bear. The best leaders never ask the people they lead to do something they wouldn’t be willing to do themselves.
Are you leading like Jesus? Jesus led by example:
“…but [Jesus] made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” – Phil 2:7-8
It’s nothing for Jesus to ask you to humble yourself, because He already did. It’s nothing for Jesus to ask you to take up your cross, because He already did. It’s nothing for Jesus to expect that you give up your life for Him, because He already did it for you!
You might be a leader; but that doesn’t mean you no longer have to serve. It doesn’t matter how high up on the Christian totem pole you are: you always have a duty “…to serve in the house of the Lord.”
Prayer:
Father, help me to lead by example. Make me a servant leader! I have expectations of excellence for the people I lead; and I want to show them how it’s done. I will lay down my life for You, every day, in Jesus’ name.
