Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it” (Genesis 4:7). By the time we see God speaking with Cain, sin has already entered into mankind. Yet God makes abundantly clear to Cain that he should be the one who controls sin; and not the other way around. Sin lies at the door, waiting to enter; but Satan can only enter into your life if you open the door for him.
The King James Version translates God’s mandate to Cain at the end of Genesis 4:7 more forcefully: “…sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.” Thou shalt means that God made complete power over sin available to Cain. Ruling over sin was not just a suggestion; it is a mandate.
So how can we make sure sin stays outside our lives, powerless and unable to enter in? Liberally proclaim the Name of Jesus over your life. Out loud. Phil 2:10 gives us full confidence that every knee must bow to the name Jesus. That includes Satan, and that includes you!
“And His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know” (Acts 3:16).
Prayer:
Father, thank You for that when Your Son Jesus died, He left us with power of attorney. I can declare the name of Jesus over every situation in my life and know that all of hell must bow to Your will. Thank You for the power in His name!
