CityLight Pastor Commentary:
“How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?” (Rom 6:2b) There is no sin so great that it can overshadow the finished work of the Cross! Yet Paul outlines very clearly that grace should never be used as an excuse to sin. The fact that God’s grace covers all sin should never be used as justification to give Him more sin to cover. As Christians, we must realize that we have been made completely free from the desire to sin. I once knew a man who was deathly afraid of dogs. He worked for years to overcome that fear, and finally conquered it. The fear no longer existed; he was dead to it, and it no longer had a hold on him. He could now live life to the fullest, without crippling fear. It would make no sense, in his delivered state, for that man to wish that every once and a while he could still be afraid of dogs. It would make no sense for that man to go out and try to be afraid of dogs every now and then. He was completely free from fear. And we are completely free from sin. Our freedom does not exist so that we can wish we were still bound, or see just how much sin we can get away with before we no longer feel free. Our freedom exists, through Christ Jesus, so that we can enjoy a restored relationship with our Father!
Prayer:
Lord, I declare that I am dead to sin! The enemy no longer has a hold on me. He couldn’t entice me to fall back into a life of sin if he tried! I am free from sin. I have tasted redemption and no imitator will suffice. Thank You for freedom in Your Son Jesus Christ!
