Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief. – Matt 13:58
When Jesus returned home, the people were “astonished” (v 54). “Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works?” they wondered (v 54). “Is this not the carpenter’s son?” they asked. They should have been overjoyed at what God was doing; but instead they were “offended” (v 57). They refused to believe Jesus was capable of everything they heard He had done. And the result? Jesus, “…did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief” (v 58).
Unbelief cancels the miraculous. Jesus tells us that, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes” (Mk 9:23). But He does not extend the same certainty to those who do not believe. So, do you really believe?
Sometimes we wait for a miracle, but at the same time we doubt God will do it! Many times we settle for hoping for the miraculous, instead of believing for a miracle. Do you see the difference? If you believe, God will move powerfully everywhere you go! But if you don’t believe, God’s goodness is restricted by your unbelief.
Faith is a choice: will you believe in Jesus? Or will you doubt He will do everything He has said He will do?
Prayer:
Father, help me to believe! Increase my faith. I know my response to unbelief shouldn’t be condemnation; it should be in invitation! I invite Your Holy Spirit to fill me with supernatural faith, in Jesus’ name.
