Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.” – Rom. 15:3
Jesus came, not to please Himself, but to “[take] away the sin of the world” (Jn. 1:29). Jesus’ ambition was not pleasure or comfort; it was obedience. In a culture where we are told to focus on personal fulfillment and doing whatever it takes to be “happy,” it is wise to reflect on the choices Jesus made. He did not aim to please Himself or to please man; He aimed to please the Father.
Jesus came, not to be served, but to serve:
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” – Mk. 10:45
And His promise is that when you abandon plans born of “selfish ambition” and “conceit” (Phil. 2:3) for the plans and purposes of God, you will be satisfied!
God’s agenda always supercedes man’s agenda. If even Jesus Christ, the Son of God, did not have the freedom to live His live for personal pleasure, how much less do we?
Prayer:
Lord, I will aim to please You and You alone! No one else’s thoughts or opinions matter. You are good, and You are God! And I am grateful.
