Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Do not love sleep, lest you come to poverty; open your eyes, and you will be satisfied with bread. – Prov. 20:13
There is a time to rest, and a time to work. “Poverty” is the Hebrew yarash (Strong’s H3423), which means to dispossess or disinherit the promise of God. The implication is that inactivity can actually cause you to dispossess or miss out on the wonderful things God has planned for your life, while intentional movement can actually hasten and spur them on!
God will show you what He wants to do in your life! But once He does, it is time to take Him by the hand and ask Him what is required on your part. Does He want you to rest, or does He want you to work? Does He want you to wait, or does He want you to move?
God will do the work. He has spoken amazing promises over your life! But you must open your eyes and invite Him to move.
Prayer:
Father, help me to wake up! You have given me such amazing work to accomplish, and such an immense mission in life. I know that You will do the heavy lifting; but I also know that participation is required on my end. Help me to know when to work, and when to rest, in Jesus’ name.
